Introduction
The medical sector is one of the most exciting for 3D printing. Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies, materials and services are already being used to change lives for the better – and there is much more to come…
As part of Ricoh UK Products Ltd’s expansion into the medical sector, since 2017, Ricoh 3D has been knowledge sharing, co-creating and partnering with ORLAU – The Orthotic Research & Locomotor Assessment Unit based at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (NHS Foundation Trust), including supporting an innovative knee alignment device (KAD) which won a prestigious TCT Healthcare Application Award in 2022.

The dedicated unit was established in 1975 by Gordon Rose, an orthopaedic surgeon, to provide assessments of mobility impairment and to develop engineering solutions for patients with disabilities.
Today ORLAU continues to:
- Assess children and adults with mobility problems by gait analysis
- Advise patients and referring clinicians on treatment options and strategies
- Deliver orthoses, mobility aids and walking devices for children and adults
- Train health professionals in the fields of movement analysis and rehabilitation engineering
- Research and develop engineering solutions for mobility impairment
In the last few years, Ricoh 3D has collaborated with ORLAU to develop a lever-hinge mechanism for ankle-foot orthotics: Ankle Contracture Correction Device (CCD) Lever Kit. In short, the 3D printed lever has made it much easier for patients to put on and take off their orthotic (otherwise known as ‘donning’ and ‘doffing’). Access the full case study by clicking here.

After extensive testing and iteration work, the lever-hinge mechanism is now in full production and has been very well received by users in their rehabilitation journeys.
Ricoh 3D is delighted to now distribute this Ankle CCD Lever Kit on behalf of ORLAU – the technical body behind the design, to individuals and organisations trained and approved by ORLAU themselves, such as other hospitals, NHS groups, and orthotists across the UK.
How do I access the training?
ORLAU ANKLE CCD COURSE
The training, aimed at supporting experienced orthotists, is designed to educate on set-up, assembly and application of the kit of parts, in addition to some ‘best practice’ tips for assembly and rehabilitation.
The next available training date is Tuesday 2 October 2024, at The Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, NHS Foundation Trust, Oswestry, Shropshire, SY10 7AG.
To book or for further information, please contact kmiller10@nhs.net and 3denquiries@ricoh-rpl.com.
~ Further courses and dates will be published here, so please do keep checking for future opportunities! Training courses will include Orthotic Management of Contractures, in association with Orthopaedic Institute. ~

How do I purchase the Ankle CCD Lever Kit?
To purchase, attendance to the training course is mandatory unless special permission from ORLAU is granted and submitted to Ricoh 3D. Please contact kmiller10@nhs.net for special permission approval.
Following the training, orthotists, physiotherapists, clinical scientists or engineers, occupational therapists, rehabilitation & orthopaedic doctors alike will be able to purchase the Lever Kit via the Ricoh 3D website.
Please note: Purchase is only available to trained physicians practicing in United Kingdom (excluding Northern Ireland).
Instructions for purchasing:
Please contact Ricoh 3D directly to discuss your requirements: 3denquiries@ricoh-rpl.com

**Your profile will be verified by ORLAU and Ricoh 3D to ensure you match the requirements to purchase the Ankle CCD Lever Kit. We aim to complete the verification process within 24 hours, during business hours. Once verified, Ankle CCD Lever Kit will appear in online catalogue to purchase immediately and in the future.
“With this cost-effective method and innovative solution, we hope orthotists around the UK are now able to easily purchase a kit of parts that can be applied to a hinged AFO shell to create a simple ankle stretching device.“

What does the Ankle CCD Lever Kit contain?
The Ankle CCD Lever Kit comprises of two lever assemblies. e.g. When ordering Quantity: 1, you will receive two lever kits. When ordering Quantity: 2, you will receive 4 lever kits, and so on.
Please note: The Ankle CCD Lever Kit does not include any orthotic shell.
