Due to the layering process of additive manufacturing, parts have inherently anisotropic properties.
This means the mechanical properties are not uniform in X, Y and Z directions. Typically, and in particular with FDM printing, the Z direction is the weakest direction as this is the direction of the layering process. It’s important to consider the best technology and material if you require a part to be isotropic in X, Y and Z and consider the part strength to optimise part performance.
Ricoh 3D offers design and consultancy services to assist with any strength considerations.
