CAD Files

Do I need a 3D model for 3D printing?

3D data is required for manufacturing with 3D printers, but at Ricoh we understand that not everyone has the technology or capabilities to provide their own 3D data.

We therefore offer a 3D creation service. That means that if you only have 2D CAD data – or even if you’ve just drawn simple shapes on a piece of paper without specs – we’re here to help.

Get in touch with us and we can generate a quote for the job.

What type of CAD files do I require for a 3D model?

At Ricoh we can accept most types of native CAD files but STEP or STL are preferred.

When 3D printing any CAD data it is converted into a STL file and then sliced prior to printing on the relevant 3D printing equipment.

3D printing applications

What applications can I use my 3D model with?

The applications for 3D printing are endless. The technology is commonly used to create end-user components in the automotive, medical, architecture, aerospace, industrial and packaging sectors.

If you have a product in mind but are unsure whether 3D printing is a suitable and cost-effective solution, speak to the experts at Ricoh for clear and honest advice.

Does polypropylene need any post treatment to make it watertight?

When the polypropylene components are removed from the AM machine, they require blasting to remove the excess powder and then they are finished. No additional coatings or treatments are required to make them watertight.

What is the minimum wall thickness for a watertight polypropylene vessel?

The minimum wall thickness for any component will be subject to the end application and will be influenced by the temperature and pressures the end part will be subjected to.

If a component is not subjected to increased pressure and kept below a temperature of 100℃, we would suggest a wall no thinner than 1mm.

Materials

Is polypropylene chemical resistant?

The polypropylene Ricoh uses exhibits the same chemical resistance as a conventional injection moulded component. We have had components subjected to long term contact with oil at elevated temperatures, with no significant effect on the polypropylene AM component.

Can I recycle my polypropylene model?

The polypropylene AM models have the same properties as an injection moulded component and can therefore be recycled using your local recycling protocols.
