What is Reverse Engineering?
Reverse Engineering allows a part to be investigated and represented as true CAD data, as opposed to a basic surface representation. It also allows features that could be missed in scanning to be included. Overall it is a more faithful representation of the intended product or component.
Using GeoMagic™ Direct X software, a scanned or designed STL can be analysed by trained engineers to identify features of the part and rebuild the original design.
A full parametric CAD file can be produced and imported into your CAD software package or sent to you as an .stp file.
Why Do You Need Parametric CAD?
Being able to create parametric data means the original design characteristics are represented in the data. As a result part damage or wear on the original object can be ignored. Exact dimensions are used, and the resulting file is a true representation of the product required.
Also, having more information about the object than just the surface mesh of an STL, allows design modifications to be made. This could be adding or removing of features, adapting the shape or scale or even using the scanned object as the base to build an entirely new design around.
With a full design history available for the Reverse Engineered object, modifications can be applied to the object itself, rather than being bolted on at the end. This ensures the final design can be made precisely as required.
Depending on your need, either freeform surface shapes or parametric models can be produced. Any object, regardless of shape, can theoretically be reverse engineered. RICOH Rapid Fab will strive to find the most suitable solution.
